March Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Theme: Mindfulness

Our SEL theme for the month of March is Mindfulness.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness means slowing down and being present in the moment.  It means focusing on what you are currently doing in the moment.

What are the benefits of practicing mindfulness?

Research has shown that mindfulness can improve attention spans, help manage stress, increase sense of well-being, improve communication skills, and reduce stress.

How do you practice mindfulness?

Practicing mindfulness does not need to be difficult or take a lot of time.  Here are some easy and quick ways that you can practice mindfulness:

  • Focus on your senses: Focus on the smell of an orange peel or the sounds of birds chirping.
  • Journal about specific activities: Ask your child to write about a specific part of their day or activity.
  • Focus on your breathing
  • Have a blindfolded taste test
  • Draw an ordinary object and really focus on the details of the object
  • Practice progressive muscle relaxation
  • Practice yoga
  • Start a gratitude journal
  • Guided meditation
